Our online share-dealing service for investors who prefer to manage their own portfolio. HSBC's online sharedealing service, InvestDirect, is available to anyone 18 years or over with an HSBC current account and access to internet banking. InvestDirect is competitively priced and enables you to manage your own portfolio, buying and selling shares quickly and efficiently.

It provides a range of online information and interactive tools to help you thoroughly research companies and markets before you start trading. InvestDirect is an 'execution only' service, meaning that investors make their own investment decisions, and execute them without receiving any advice. This means that the protection offered by the Financial Conduct Authority's rules on assessing suitability will not apply to such transactions. Through InvestDirect, you can buy UK shares, UK government gilt-edged stocks, and most UK-listed Exchange Traded Funds.

All of these investments can be held within a stocks and shares ISA, meaning they are free of income tax on interest and dividends, and free of Capital Gains Tax on the gain when the shares are sold. Stamp Duty or Stamp Duty Reserve Tax may be payable depending on the type of investment purchased. HSBC's InvestDirect Plus offers further benefits.

In addition to being able to buy and sell UK securities, you can trade stocks and shares listed in the US. InvestDirect Plus investors can also apply for a Trading Reserve facility, whereby their existing portfolio of qualifying shares held with HSBC can form the basis of a loan to buy more shares for the portfolio.

Among the investment tools that HSBC offers with both InvestDirect and InvestDirect Plus is a virtual portfolio, enabling investors to road-test investment ideas before buying, monitoring price changes and the behaviour of the virtual portfolio as a whole. Once you have invested using InvestDirect or InvestDirect Plus, your shares will be held electronically in an Investment Account on your behalf. HSBC will also collect dividends for you when they are due.

Importantly, you will have full control over your portfolio and you will be able to monitor its value online. You can also set up alerts so that you receive an email to let you know when share prices change. HSBC InvestDirect and InvestDirect Plus provide a reliable, efficient platform for customers who are interested in investing in stocks, shares and gilts.

You will still retain beneficial ownership of all your assets. We will ensure your dividends are collected and dealt with according to your instructions but you won't receive any correspondence or shareholder benefits other than notification of corporate actions.
